Craig Wright the chief scientist of nChain, just claimed that he “was Satoshi”. The popular pseudonym “Satoshi” is known as the publisher of a white paper that the pioneer cryptocurrency Bitcoin was born of.
This direct declaration certainly caused a huge ruckus, inciting legal action and ramifications. In November of 2018, Wright also made the same declaration via email to Roger Ver. This was ignored, as this came up amidst the tensions of the hardfork of the Bitcoin Cash.
WRIGHT’S WAYIn “Careful what you wish for…” Wright published via Medium, he tells his story with the world of Bitcoin and ended with the Satoshi claim. Wright began the post by stating similarities between himself and Steve Jobs, saying
“When he started, Jobs was the outsider. He was rejected, and fought to grow what he was building each and every day. The attempted building of an alternative version of what I created goes against all I stand for. Yet, I allowed myself to get into such a position.”
Wright claims that his idea behind Bitcoin was not to “help an anonymous money-transfer system,” as he wanted it to exist within the tenets of the law. He also said that he detests the likes of Julian Assange and Ross Ulbricht ( of Wikileaks and Silk Road respectively), who created platforms outside the tenets of the law, inevitably giving rise to breaches and national insecurity. Wright, in reference to Assange and Ulbricht, says
“They are not freedom fighters, they are not libertarians. They simply are predators, and they are all that Bitcoin was designed to make far more difficult.”
Wright states that he always believed that the Bitcoin blockchain is supposed to function within the legal boundaries. This implies that if the law is broken, transactions should be easily traceable, and reviewed with effectiveness. His perspective of the blockchain technology is that it should discourage criminal activity by being able to be held to scrutiny by the law when necessary.
The unmodifiable and indelible record of the Bitcoin blockchain implies that its’ usage would be able to offer information verification.
BITCOIN AND THE SILK ROAD EMERGENCEAccording to Wright, the increase in the usage of blockchain technology in criminal activity stems from the bilateral transparency, such as its’ use in Silk Road. He added that
“Silk Road was poison to me. I saw a decade of work corrupted, twisted, and for a time I despaired. Bitcoin was like a child to me. I saw a child who had lost their way and become the worst thing they could be.”
He also denies Silk Road being an inevitable outcome of Bitcoin’s existence. He offered enlightenment on the stagnation of Bitcoins market cap at 1MB, as the law could be avoided with the making of off-chain channels, that would permit extra data to be deleted. The sequence of events could lead to the invention of another Silk Road.
Wright added that “Bitcoin is the mirror of what I see, a world of work. We are stewards to wealth. We do not own it, it owns us, and we have to sacrifice daily to make the information flow to retain the right, not the privilege to help maintain the plumbing that is the conduit of life.”
At the end of his Medium post, right after refusing to give the names of others who helped him in its development, he states that Bitcoin was his idea, his creation, and his design, he dramatically concludes the post with “I was Satoshi.”
