Cryptocurrency-powered ad-blocking web browser Brave has announced that they will be creating a new mechanism on their platform that will allow users to tip authors of tweets and Reddit posts in the form of Brave’s Basic Attention Token (BAT).
Brave is a San Francisco based start-up founded by JavaScript coding language and Mozilla creator Brendan Eich. The company brands itself as being on a mission to fix the web. Brave is an open-source platform designed to offer secure browsing and unparalleled support for content creators by offering an innovative attention-based ecosystem of rewards. The new cryptocurrency tipping function is set to take effect during the fourth quarter of 2018.
The Brave team explains the new model simply, “A user likes a tweet and can give BAT to the tweeter, and optionally tweet back that he tipped.”
Similar functionality will be available on Reddit.
“You are not a product. Why use a browser that treats you like one? Much more than a browser, Brave is a new way of thinking about how the web works.”
Brave began its development through a publicly funded ICO in 2016. The company has currently signed up more than 20,000 verified publishers, 13,500 Youtube channels, 5,300 websites and 1,100 Twitch streamers—all of whom have agreed to share ad revenue among Brave users who view their content.
While the new tipping functionality likely won’t making anyone rich from their tweets or Reddit posts, the feature represents a potentially exciting step forward in creating an Internet that ceases to be predicated on privacy infringement and obnoxious advertising schemes.
“We have to disconnect the bad system,” said Brendan Eich. “I talk about putting chlorine in the pool.”
How Brave WorksBy default, Brave’s web browser doesn’t show any ads. Users have the option to opt in to see Brave-provided advertising content, for which they will receive BAT rewards payments for each view.
“Once we’re satisfied with the performance of the ad system, Brave ads will be shown directly in the browser in a private channel to users who consent to see them,” reads a Brave blog post from last month. “When the Brave ad system becomes widely available, users will receive 70% of the gross ad revenue, while preserving their privacy.”
Brave is Growing FastIn addition to its rapidly growing list of content creators, Brave is reported to have already acquired 3 million monthly users. CEO Brendan Eich projects that the company will reach 5 million users by the end of this year.
Last month Brave announced that it had hit the top-10 category in ‘free communication apps’ for its android browser in the Google Play store in the United States, along with another 20 countries across the globe.
