In a pioneering move, Bitget has officially joined UNICEF’s Game Changers Coalition, embarking on a crucial mission to provide digital and blockchain skills to 300,000 young people across eight countries in 2025. 

This collaboration marks a significant milestone, introducing the first-ever blockchain module into UNICEF’s existing STEAM curriculum and reinforcing a shared dedication to gender equality, inclusion, and innovation. 

To understand the depth of this initiative, we spoke with key figures driving it – Paul Heber, Chief Communication at UNICEF Luxembourg; Sunita Grote, Lead at UNICEF Ventures; and Gracy Chen, CEO of Bitget. This partnership isn’t just about teaching technology, it’s about building trust, fostering empowerment, and preparing a new generation for the future.

At the core of UNICEF’s strategy for this groundbreaking partnership lies a meticulously crafted approach to communication and trust. As Paul Heber, Chief Communication at UNICEF Luxembourg, emphasized, the public often only sees the final outcome of such collaborations, not the extensive work behind the scenes. She highlighted a critical concern: the significant disparities in venture capital flow within the tech industry, where women founders and certain regions receive disproportionately less investment. This often results in technology solutions that fail to fully address the needs of marginalized groups. Therefore, a core principle is to ensure affected communities are part of the design and ownership of technological solutions. This partnership with Bitget directly addresses this by focusing on closing the skills gap for women and girls, particularly adolescent girls, by integrating blockchain into the curriculum and empowering them as active builders, not just consumers, of technology.

Grote underscored the pivotal role of open-source principles and the Digital Public Goods (DPG) framework in fostering equitable technology. Open-source solutions ensure that technology, including its underlying code and design, is openly accessible, allowing for widespread adaptation and scaling. This removes barriers and expands the benefits to many more users. Additionally, open source enhances online safety by allowing full examination of how a solution is built, which is crucial for protecting children’s safety, data privacy, and rights when interacting with digital platforms. These principles will be directly reflected in the curriculum, with Grote proudly noting that one game developed through the Game Changers Coalition in Kazakhstan has already met DPG standards, contributing to global resources for women and girls.

For adolescent girls, blockchain literacy is seen as a crucial pathway to long-term empowerment and economic inclusion. Grote highlighted the current disparity between the significant number of girls and women engaging in gaming (50% of 2 billion gamers) and their underrepresentation in the tech industry (only 25%). This partnership aims to bridge this gap by equipping young women with the necessary skills to actively participate in and benefit from the digital economy. The initiative acts on multiple levels: directly empowering girls with skills at a young age to build their own solutions, understand technology, and later find employment and empowerment opportunities. It’s a comprehensive approach to fostering a generation of female innovators and creators.

The UNICEF Game Changers Coalition program is designed for maximum accessibility, with no prerequisites for young people to join. The learning material assumes no prior coding experience, starting at an entry-level with free and easily accessible game development engines. This ensures the program reaches the demographics who need it most, directly addressing the gender gap in the tech industry. While access to the internet and devices remains a consideration, UNICEF actively mitigates these challenges by renting laptops for training centers, collaborating with government-led training locations, and integrating with school systems. The program’s in-person and hybrid modalities, already active in eight countries with localized content, will soon be complemented by a global online course, further expanding reach.

UNICEF Ventures will be closely involved in monitoring and evaluating the technical quality and ethical standards of the blockchain content, leveraging its extensive experience in designing similar educational programs. Grote also shared UNICEF’s broader vision for expanding crypto and blockchain partnerships, seeing each collaboration as a learning opportunity to test both financial and technical models. Bitget’s contribution of both financial support and technical expertise, including their academy’s role in curriculum development and connections to the Web3 ecosystem, is invaluable. This integrated approach not only provides financial aid but also ensures UNICEF stays at the forefront of emerging technologies and connected to a growing network of innovators.

Bitget plans to integrate blockchain education by aligning with UNICEF’s existing events and methodologies, adding “crypto 101s” to current courses. These will cover fundamental concepts like how blockchain works, stablecoins, and the differences between various cryptocurrencies. Chen emphasized the importance of making content both educational and entertaining, suggesting gamification and social interaction to keep younger audiences engaged. She also underscored a key lesson from past initiatives: the difficulty of finding truly great educators who can simplify complex, rapidly evolving Web3 concepts for specific audiences.
