The cryptocurrency market moves up and down in a way that traditional finance does not, but the pattern has been hard to predict for a while. A recent Twitter post by DataLight urged consumers to examine the Wikipedia views for the different coins.
Including a top 8 chart of the most popular coins by this information, the platform posted the question
“How do you think, what does a high amount of Wikipedia views signal for a coin?”

The top 8 coins, according to the number of views on Wikipedia from December 24th of last year until the 24th of January this year, are:
BTC (292,351 views) ETH (46,161 views) BAT (27,093 views) XRP (21,544 views) BCH (19,720 views) XMR (17,208 views) DOGE (15,922 views) LTC (11,455 views)Since Bitcoin has been at the top of every cryptocurrency list for years, it should not be a surprise that it is viewed on Wikipedia over six times the amount of the second crypto asset on the list (ETH). However, it is curious that there are many coins in that top 8 that have not even reached the top of the charts in CoinMarketCap.
Even though XRP overshadowed Ethereum briefly in September, it still was not enough to overtake the coin in page views. The former DataLight report, BAT was not even mentioned, and now that same token has risen above XRP in page views.
Dogecoin (DOGE) has not kept the same popularity, though it almost overtook Ethereum in second place a few months ago. This meme coin still looks as though it is here to stay. However, many analysts are examining to see if this popularity corresponds with a rise in price.
Though BTC and ETH remain the top two cryptocurrencies by market cap, the popularity of the Basic Attention Token could be enough to earn it the same position on CoinMarketCap.com.
