Two French companies — IOV and Be-Bound — have teamed up to bridge the digital divide in the most vulnerable communities around the world.
Focus on Mobile and BlockchainIOV’s blockchain simplification process and Be-Bound’s Augmented Connectivity will be blended in a new solution to enable application deployment in regions where technology is yet to make a strong presence. Be-Bound brings mobile and IoT coverage to over 95 percent of the world’s population. Its technology runs on existing networks, removing the need for infrastructure investments.
Most of the areas where the two partners intend to work do not have basic instruments needed to trade value, like a bank account. Be-Bound cofounder and CEO Yazid Chir explained how blockchains and augmented connectivity could boost economic growth and distribute it to a larger populace. He noted:
“We believe in blockchain technology as an enabler of inclusive growth and sustainable development. As blockchain becomes the shared infrastructure for people and organizations to collaborate, we have a responsibility to ensure that the technology can reach all communities, including the most marginalized.”
Challenges to the Partners’ GoalsTo fulfill their goals, the two French companies will have to work their way through several challenges. In the developing world, where infrastructure may not exist or may still be in its primitive form, Be-Bound’s technology coupled with IOV’s blockchain solution could bring a revolution. But the basic infrastructure needs will have to be supplemented by better awareness among the people.
The systems should be tailored to all audiences, even to individuals who may have little technical backgrounds. IOV’s decentralized registry of human-readable blockchain names called Blockchain Name Service (BNS) and its open-source standard for atomic-swap enabled communications called Blockchain Communication Protocol (BCP) will enable this. These will allow communities to have better access to blockchain and enjoy cheaper international payment transfers. These will also facilitate peer-to-peer transactions in the communities to address their simple payment needs.
Karim Ganem, cofounder and CEO of IOV, commented on their goals, saying:
“With the rise of blockchain in our economies, the opportunity for growth should be available to all. By collaborating with Be-Bound, we aim to turn blockchain into a solution for developing countries by giving equal access to the technology and its benefits.”
