With the recent news that several of the world’s largest asset managers have invested in cryptocurrency and blockchain technologies, coupled with a surge in Bitcoin prices to all-time highs and massive growth in DeFi strategies and platforms, many in finance are signaling that crypto is taking its place among assets that must be considered. Today, as a way to better serve its world-class clients in the financial services industry, Seward & Kissel LLP announced the launch of a new cryptocurrency blog. Coined “SKrypto,” the blog will feature breaking cryptocurrency news alongside heart-of-the-matter analysis, as well as interviews with industry insiders.
“We are only in the second inning of crypto, and the game’s rules seem to be changing as more players take to the field,” said Anthony Tu-Sekine, a partner at Seward & Kissel and head of its Blockchain and Cryptocurrency Group. “Our cryptocurrency experience combined with our long history and deep understanding of the asset management, banking, and broader financial services industries puts us in the perfect position to help many different types of businesses navigate and succeed in this burgeoning asset class as it evolves.”
The SKrypto blog will be authored primarily by lawyers in Seward & Kissel’s Blockchain and Cryptocurrency Group, who are drawn from across the Firm and include those experienced in securities law, capital markets, intellectual property, tax, and other relevant areas. They bring specific experience advising clients on issues relating to blockchain and distributed ledger technology, including cryptocurrencies. The blog will cover fast-moving legal developments to help readers navigate the quickly evolving area.
In the blog’s first Q&A podcast, the team spoke with Will Coleman, director of technology services at Cohen & Co, the largest auditor of cryptocurrency investment funds in the U.S., about his thoughts on the regulatory environment and some of the anticipated developments in the crypto industry in 2021, the biggest risks associated with crypto, predictions for how the industry will look 30 years from now, and more. You can listen to the full interview on the SKrypto blog here. Along with expert Q&As, the blog will detail notable deals the firm has handled and in a feature the blog calls “legal tokens,” offer legal insights on current events in the industry.
“Cryptocurrencies are a fascinating topic that deserve detailed exploration,” said Meir Grossman, a partner in the Business Transactions Group. “SKrypto will provide a three-dimensional view of the subject, given that our experience with it comes from so many different areas of the law.”
