MIT Hacking Connects Art and Blockchain

On October 13 and 14, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology will be hosting the sixth annual Hacking Arts festival. The event explores the intersection of art and technology in a broad sense. One of this year’s major themes is blockchain.

A panel, called “Art in the Age of Blockchain” is scheduled to appear and it features DADA co-founder Yehudit MAM; VAST founder Dan Piech; and CryptoPunks co-creator John Watkinson. According to the event’s website, CryptoPunks is “the first art/collectible project on Ethereum, which will become the basis for ERC-721.” The panel is planning to discuss how they are “mining [the] cultural value” of blockchain technology.

As for the hackathon, it is expected to bring together about 200 individuals who can win cash prizes for their hacks. Last year, the winning project was an application that creates a virtual avatar based on a user’s activity data. Other projects included “Perception Neuron motion capture service and an immersive grape-eating experience the lives between the human and the digital world.” Those who participate in the event are not required to use blockchain technology.

The event is also focused on interactive art in contemporary society, the accessibility of art, and financing models for artistic ventures.
