Built on Ethereum, CryptoKitties took the world by storm in November 2017 and was hailed as one of the “very first use cases for blockchain beyond cryptocurrencies.” The adorable furry collectables became so popular that they at one point accounted for as much as 30 percent of the trading volume on the Ethereum network. Some of the game’s most popular cats have sold for more than $200,000.
As part of the new “Open Codes. The World as a Field of Data” program, the Center for Art and Media in Germany will be hosting a number of discussions and workshops surrounding cryptocurrency and blockchain. The Bringing Blockchain to Life CryptoKitties exhibit is anticipated to be one of the highlights of the events directed toward young attendees.
“CryptoKitties’ good design and appealing aesthetics are responsible for introducing entirely new audiences to the potential of blockchain technology,” said CryptoKitties co-founder and CEO Roham Gharegozlou. “Our exhibit at ZKM continues our mission of demystifying the blockchain so that the people that can benefit from it most — whether they’re creators and consumers, or artists and their fans — can be a part of the technology’s future.”
The new exhibit was also praised by CEO of Meural Vladimir Vukivec, who said he was excited “to help CryptoKitties make their museum debut by providing them with a physical home that’s worthy of a museum setting.”
Crypto Collectibles a Growing Business in BlockchainAn increasing number of media and professional sports organizations are getting involved in cryptocurrency and blockchain through the development of CryptoKitties-inspired virtual collectibles games. Last month, Major League Baseball announced that it would be partnering with Los Angeles-based blockchain startup Lucid Sight to create an MLB digital collectibles game on the Ethereum blockchain. The new game is part of a larger strategy by the MLB to attract younger fans to its slowing business.
