Our lack of interest in data ethics will come back to haunt us

When was the last time you saw a creepy ad on Facebook, which seemed to know about a product you were discussing with a coworker? Or when was the last time you noticed that your Google search had been modified to suit variables like your current location and personal interests? The new space race is all about satellites: Pros and cons of each orbit

For most people, satellites probably bring to mind things like weather forecasts, GPS, or satellite TV broadcasting. Other common satellite applications, such as extending cellular coverage, connecting ATM machines, and restoring communications infrastructure quickly, among others, often go unnoticed since they’re not visible to users. дальше »

Why poor teens haven’t abandoned Facebook

A Pew Research study published earlier this year showed that, statistically, a large number of teenagers from families with lower-than-average annual income still use Facebook. While 36 percent of teens from families making $75,000 or more per year, and 56 percent of teens from the $30,ooo-$74,999 range said they used Facebook, the number rose to a whopping 70 percent when it came to teens in families earning $30,000 or less. дальше »

Facebook Ad Library: Only 3 “Brexit” ads for whole month. Yeah, right!

Facebook may well look back on 2018 as its annus horribilis. Litecoin Will Fly If It Makes The Most Of Social Media

The pursuit for cryptocurrency adoption seems to focus on three major cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash and Litecoin. Indeed, this isn’t to disregard the likes of XRP and Stellar, both of which also provide a solid use in mainstream society, however in terms of worldwide societal adoption, Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash and Litecoin tend to be the go-to currencies. дальше »

Why trying to regulate social media is a political mess

Free speech is a key aspect of the internet, but it has become increasingly obvious that many online will push that freedom to extremes, leaving website comment sections, Twitter feeds and Facebook groups awash with racist, sexist, homophobic, or otherwise unpalatable opinions and vitriolic views, and obscene or shocking images or videos. дальше »

The free internet makes us the product — we need to stop it

The bad headlines continue to stack up for Facebook this year: from the Cambridge Analytica scandal, to the New York Times report that Facebook gave Apple, Samsung, and other mobile device makers access to its users personal data without permission, to the revelation that the firm routinely gives user information and preferences to several Chinese telecommunications firms, to last week’s security breach in which hackers took control of 50 million user accounts as well as any third-party sites those users logged into via Facebook. дальше »

The ‘female blackout’ protest didn’t work — it silenced women

Over the weekend, a viral post flooded women’s Facebook inboxes urging them to participate in a “blackout” on Facebook. Women were asked to protest against domestic violence and spread awareness of the issue by replacing their profile pictures with a completely black image and leave the social media platform for 13 hours. дальше »

Facebook advertisers can target you with data you didn’t even list on your profile

Facebook is sharing personally identifying information that you never submitted to the social network with its advertisers – and you can’t erase it from their records. That’s from a paper (PDF) published by researchers at Northeastern University and Princeton University, who looked into how ad targeting works on Facebook. дальше »
