The production of ASIC mining rigs has always been somewhat controversial. Because the miners using ASIC are considered by some blockchains to be “cheating,” many companies have to constantly come out with new versions of their own ASIC tech in order to dodge the bans and patches on major cryptocurrency blockchains like Bitcoin and Ethereum. Despite the controversy, though ASIC mining still remains incredibly popular among the mining crowd and inside the changing industry.
Bitmain has the biggest dominance on the market by far. With new mining rigs coming out nearly every month, the company is a monster manufacturer of high-tech mining equipment. They are not, however, the only player in this immensely popular market. Avalon seems to be trailing relatively closely behind the massive Bitmain mining manufacturers. Started way back in the 2012 infancy of the cryptocurrency community, Avalon was created by Zhang Nan Geng and Yifu Guo, two respected names within the field at the time. Meeting regularly in the BitcoinTalk forum, the pair originally created the mining company in order to create new tech innovations for Bitcoin.
But late in 2012, the company began to create a variety of ASIC-powered Bitcoin miners. Though Yifu eventually left the project for his own reasons, Zhang continued to work with Avalon, expanding operations through the creation of the Canaan platform. From there, the operation only grew. Now, Avalon remains among the most respected mining equipment manufacturers in all of China, employing over 100 full-time engineers who constantly strive for new products that satisfy the needs of consumers without falling victim to patches and bans on servers and blockchains.
To date, Avalon has created more than twelve unique miners under their respected Avalon name. But right now, the most popular miner they offer is the Avalon 6, which is on the C Block. This remains the most popular product the company offers, likely because of the low price associated with operating the machine, as well as the relatively high output it offers to the average miner and his setup.
Does It Work?Likely the most important question to the prospective user of the cryptocurrency miner, the first consideration is the extent to which the product is technically capable of mining currency. The answer to this question is, put simply, yes. The Avalon6 is a technically proficient miner. Using a hash rate of around 3.5 TH per second in a power supply unit of over 1200 Watts, the technical specs of the rig are comparable to any good ones currently on the market.
The unit houses 80 of the patented ASIC chips (18nm A3218) which have become a trademark of the technical backdrop of Avalon mining technology. They are known for their efficiency and, when combined with a processor of around 500 MHz, they contribute to a smooth and effective mining process on the Bitcoin blockchain.
A Bulky SetupOne potential drawback to the technical proficiency of the Avalon6 mining rig is its size. The setup actually weighs over ten pounds, making it one of the heavier pieces in the business. Especially considering that most effective mining setups have 3-4 of the same rig setup in any given space, the large nature of this device is something that potential miners need to consider before making their purchase.
Few Overheating ProblemsAnother major consideration in any mining setup is the likelihood that the mining rig will overheat, an occurrence which can result in real-world damage and problems. Luckily for fans of the Avalon service, the Avalon6 has a built-in fan and boasts industry-leading temperature control mechanisms. This means that, while users should still keep an eye on the machine to prevent rare problems from happening, it is unlikely that the Avalon6 is going to overheat anytime soon.
Price To Efficiency: Is It Worth It?In the end, this question comes down to the needs of the customer. The Avalon6 is among the cheaper of models of ASIC rigs available on the market at this time. The unit is less than half as expensive as leading miner Antminer S9, but any honest review will reveal that this means that the product is also not quite as efficient as other, more expensive brands.
But for the price, Avalon6 is a capable machine with several built-in features to maximize the mining experience and profit.
