Visa recently received another principal member in Europe — a payments platform Wirex. The platform was approved after successfully completing the Visa’s FinTech Fast Track Program.
Visa’s newest principal memberWirex is a UK-licensed payments firm, which now has permission to issue Visa cards. More than that, it can also sell any related products, and even apply for additional licenses.
Visa’s head of cryptocurrency and senior director, Cuy Sheffield, commented on the new move. He said that the company is excited to work with an innovative fintech firm like Wirex.
In addition, it is excited about the prospect of helping Wirex’s own customers use cryptocurrencies at over 61 million merchants across the world, who are using Visa’s own payment network.
Wirex continues to expandBefore becoming Visa’s principal member this Tuesday, the company also became a principal member of Mastercard. However, this happened earlier this year, in July 2020.
Thanks to its own efforts, Wirex managed to expand its network quite a bit before joining up with the two card giants. The company claims that it offers crypto and fiat currency payment services to more than three million users in the Asia-Pacific region and Euro Economic Area.
Furthermore, Wirex is also planning to launch its own cryptocurrency card. This will be a debit card that will allow users to deposit their tokens, and then use them for making payments in fiat or crypto. Thanks to its partnership with Japan-based financial company, SBI Holdings, Wirex also has a strong foothold in Asia.
The two companies have been partners since 2017. As for its work in the crypto sector, it is worth mentioning that it launched as many as 26 stablecoins within Stellar’s ecosystem last year.
