What Does Siemens Internet of Energy Have in Store for the World?

2018-7-5 13:04

After launching the first intelligent transformer in the world, known as Sensformer, Siemens is getting ready to innovate further and become a pioneer of the Internet of Energy. The company is looking forward to creating a decentralized, two-flow energy grid that works with distributed ledger technology. The new grid will also be decarbonized.

Sensformer Debuts a New Kind of Transformers

On Monday, July 2, Siemens unveiled the first-of-its-kind intelligent transformer called Sensformer. The company believes that their innovation will be critical to the industry’s progress and compared it with the advent of smartphones in the mobile phone industry.

While regular transformers perform the function of voltage and current regulator between different power supply units, the new transformer by Siemens will deliver additional data about the units’ operating status to the cloud, where apps analyze their performance. It comes pre-equipped with sensors that can measure in real time oil temperature, oil level and winding current on the low-voltage side. It also has a GPS transmitter to determine the position of the unit with high accuracy. The data collected by the transformer is then transmitted to the cloud via an Ethernet connection or GSM communications.

Making the Internet of Energy Possible

Siemens intends to create a decentralized and decarbonized two-flow energy grid using blockchain technology, which it calls the Internet of Energy. Robert Klaffus, senior vice president of digital grid systems, said:

“We need a decentralized and then a digitalized energy system because, at the end of the day, it is about having a future on this planet for our next generation.”

In order to create a livable planet for our future generations, Siemens envisions a future where the energy system is decentralized and powered by renewable sources like wind and solar. Blockchain technology can help in creating a reliable system that can help manage complex power flows, coupled with the Internet of Things.

Klaffus also said that the single flow energy system that runs from the operator to the consumer should be changed to a double flow system where energy can be “traded back to the grid.”

The company already has a pilot project running in Brooklyn. This microgrid project enables peer-to-peer interaction.
