Canada has made history as being the first country to completely legalize marijuana, which was already an innovative decision to start. Now, that policy has allowed many companies to flourish, though validating authenticity of products has largely been unregulated and unlicensed. WeedMD, a cannabis group based out of Ontario, has officially gained their own license as a producer that can authenticate and track cannabis strains, which is now a part of the sales program. While this feat is notable on its own, it is also the first company in the entire world to do so.

The licensing has allowed WeedMD to create a “first of its kind” cannabis validation registration program, which has been done in conjunction with Blockstrain Technology Corp. CEO of WeedMD, Keith Merker, commented, “We congratulate all the teams that worked on this ground-breaking achievement. With the completion of genetic testing, consumers will appreciate the traceability and origin assurance of the WeedMD cannabis that they are purchasing.” He added, “We now have a total of 40 active cannabis strains from our genetics bank that hold the Blockstrain Certificate of Authenticity and are able to be cross-referenced as verifiable strains in Blockstrain’s database – from genome to sale.”

The CEO of Blockstrain, Robert Galarza, is also optimistic about what this new program and this new licensing bring for his own brand. In favor of what the partnership brings to the table for consumers, Galarza said,

“For years, consumers have been purchasing cannabis products with very little information on what exactly is being purchased, but they can now trace strain origin and their CBD and/or THC content, along with other pertinent information. With the unique technology of the Master Genome Strain and Clone Registration Program, producers can now guarantee their strains and provide customers with product assuredness.”

During this program, the team from Blockstrain takes on the role of collecting data from the plants and performing protocols for genomic sequencing. The results are registered on the database, run on the blockchain, which protects the intellectual property from being altered, and validates the strains that were examined. All of the information collected during this time can be tracked by anyone that involves itself with the company.
