Following the footsteps of Virginia Republican Robert Goodlatte, US representative Tulsi Gabbard has also revealed her cryptocurrency holdings. Her financial disclosure reports show investments in Ethereum and Litecoin. Several more disclosures are expected in the upcoming weeks as lawmakers are required to report their cryptocurrency holdings publicly.
No Gains From Ethereum, or LitecoinGabbard reported that she had not received any gains from her crypto holdings. She bought between $1,001 and $15,000 worth of ETH and LTC coins late last year. Both the currencies were bought on Dec 12. The details of these transactions and the exact amount that she spent are not available yet. Gabbard is currently serving in the Armed Services Committee, as well as the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
The disclosure has become mandatory for the lawmakers in accordance with a memo issued by the House Committee on Ethics. Any crypto transactions over the $1,000 mark have to be reported by the House Representatives as part of their financial disclosure reports. Purchase or sale of digital assets has to be reported within 45 days of the transaction.
Who Is More Likely to Reveal Holdings? In May, exactly a month before the mandate, the chair of the House Judiciary Committee Robert Goodlatte revealed that he holds between $17,000 and $80,000 of cryptocurrencies — primarily Bitcoin, Ethereum and Bitcoin Cash. His son, Bobby Goodlatte Jr., is an angel investor in Coinbase — the largest digital coin exchange in the US. But details of his involvement is not known yet.
One of the most likely to disclose his holdings next is Jared Polis. He is the co-founder of the Congressional Blockchain Caucus, which worked to introduce blockchain technology to government services and encourage its adoption. Back in February 2017, Polis filed a petition to the House Committee on Ethics claiming that virtual currency holdings should follow the same requirements provided for financial disclosures.
Another likely candidate is Mark Warner, who has been a crypto bull and predicts the market to go as high as $20 trillion. As an early investor in cellular phones, Warner says that he finds parallels between the two industries in terms of global impact.
