Medium, a popular publishing platform, is apparently following self-regulatory policies after it suspended blog posts from a few cryptocurrency projects. Two blockchain projects also claimed that posts by companies operating in the industry are being restricted. A recently updated policy from the platform could be responsible for the prohibition of these pages.
Suspended Blog Posts Lead to ConfusionThe account of Blockchain.io was temporarily suspended by Medium, though it resumed activity shortly after. However, its most recent blog post regarding its airdrop event now leads to a blank page that says, “This page is unavailable.”
Status, an Ethereum-based messaging platform, faced similar restrictions while trying to publish a post announcing its latest product updates. The company explained that the post was suspended immediately, after which an automated email from the platform was received that called out a violation of its new policy regarding cryptocurrencies. No specifics were detailed by the platform.
Status later added a post titled, “Status, Medium, and Censorship,” in which it detailed the words that may have been restricted. The post read:
“Though we had not violated any of these policies, we re-submitted several revisions that carefully edited out any potential trigger words, like “bounty,” “ETH,” and “SNT.” The post was never successfully published.”
When Did the Policy Change?Medium’s policy likely changed way before the companies pointed out the changes. The last update to the policy was made in February this year. It is interesting to note that the blogging site always describes itself as a “free and open platform for anyone to write their views and opinions” and propagated the idea that “free expression deserves a lot of leeway, so we generally think the best response to bad ideas is good ideas, not censorship.” However, these lines have been removed, and the company now has discretion to “remove any content you post for any reason.”
This decision by the company could lead to the end of a free speech platform, which is already one of too few in the increasingly regulated world. Companies like Facebook, Twitter, and Google, have already designed a severely restrictive framework to remove content related to digital currencies and ICOs from their platform. It seems likely that Medium’s crackdown on the cryptocurrency sector will continue and might become more prohibitive in the future.
