Justin Sun, founder of TRON, has published a blog post this morning announcing that the TRON Foundation has officially acquired the popular peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing platform BitTorrent. Sun also announced that BitTorrent will become part of the TRON ecosystem, “making TRON the largest decentralized Internet ecosystem in the world.”
P2P file sharing networks like BitTorrent allow users to transfer large files like movies, TV shows, applications and digital audio. It is estimated that P2P networks currently make up 43 to 70 percent of all Internet traffic. BitTorrent’s decentralized network is one of the most popular P2P file sharing platforms in the world and takes up an estimated 3.35 percent of worldwide bandwidth.
“BitTorrent is the genesis of the decentralization movement,” Sun writes. “Developers, entrepreneurs, and the decentralized Web community regard BitTorrent as the original pioneers of decentralization technology. It is the foundation of an open, transparent, shared Internet protocol.”
TRON will now be joining forces with BitTorrent to bring about TRON’s vision for a free and decentralized Internet.
“With the integration of BitTorrent, TRON aims to liberate the Internet from the stranglehold of large corporations, give data rights back to the individual, and reignite the early 21st century vision of a free, transparent, decentralized network to connect the world, because the internet belongs to the people.”
Sun states repeatedly in today’s announcement that BitTorrent users, supporters, and team members are now part of the “Tron family.” His excitement regarding the future of Tron’s new partnership with BitTorrent is obvious.
Details regarding what this new partnership will specifically entail have not been released at this time.
