Crypto Mining Malware Targets Linux

Cryptocurrency malware is a big issue and another type of malware has been reported by Trend Micro, a Japanese cybersecurity company. The malware is capable of conceal its existence within CPU through a rootkit component. Further, the malware is able to upgrade itself.

The ability to hide and upgrade are what give the malware its advantages. The only factor that it has difficulty hiding is the increase in CPU it causes. However, this isn’t much of an issue because while the malware is hiding, it will repurpose the computer code by editing a few lines. The computers most affected by this malware are Linux and most are impacted by plugins.

When the plugin is installed, it receives admin rights and the malware can operate using privileges that are normally given to applications. This is not the first type of malware of its kind -Trend Micro recently reported in September on a malware that functioned on the same entry system.

Cryptojacking has become a big issue in several countries. For example, South Korea recently scheduled a trial for hackers who infected over 6,000 computers with a malicious form of crypto mining malware. In the United States, a code was leaked that targeted Microsoft systems. Hackers allegedly stole the code from the NSA and the code has been used to increase the spread of malware mining infections.
