TikTok Integrates Audius as First Music Streaming Partner

2021-8-17 15:47

Sharing music to TikTok is now one click away for artists as Audius becomes the first music streaming platform integrated with social media behemoth.

TikTok and the blockchain-based music streaming platform Audius announced a groundbreaking new partnership. Artists on the platform can now upload their music to the TikTok platform with a single click. This marks the first music streaming platform with the ability to share directly to TikTok as “TikTok sounds”.

Prior to the integration, artists could upload music to TikTok, but it wasn’t straightforward. Now, with Audius, one click and it’s up.

Audius is the new kid on the block in terms of music streaming platforms. The space is mostly dominated by the likes of Spotify and Apple Music. However, as the decentralized space continues to garner hype, platforms such as Audius feel the effects.

The platform grew from under a million monthly users at the beginning of the year to over five million in August, according to Audius. This integration follows TikTok’s report that 75 percent of the 732 million active users say they find new music via the app.

Not only is this move big for the future of the music industry, but for visibility of the power of blockchain technology.

Crypto gives artists the power

Audius is one of a few blockchain-based platforms with the potential to disrupt traditional operations in the music industry.  These types of platforms aim to give back control to artists and creators through transparent royalties, streaming data, and more. According to co-founder and CEO of Audius, Roneil Rumburg, these are the things artists want too.

“The artists we’ve been talking to want to find better ways to connect the following they’ve built up on TikTok to other places where they can monetize their work better.”

There are over 100,000 artists currently on Audius. The platform is even home to tracks by big music industry names including Diplo, Weezer, deadmau5, and Mike Shinoda.

Forrest Browning, co-founder and chief product officer of Audius, commented on the company’s artist focused approach:

“In our view, we are far more pro-artist than the other streaming options out there right now. We love the cross pollination of  ‘stick it on Audius and then go to TikTok.’ While I can understand the Spotify business model, they probably don’t want folks going to TikTok from a monetization perspective. But we don’t really care where your listens are coming from or what we help enable; we’re just here to get as many ears on your track as possible.”

NFTs FTW

Non-fungible tokens have been one of the major conductors of traffic into crypto space. This is especially the case in the music industry, as artists from across all genres engage with the technology.

NFTs have the ability to breathe new life into artists’ work. Even music industry juggernaut Sony Music caught on to the potential of the technology. Audius also makes use of NFTs, but not for buying and selling.

On the streaming platform NFTs are positioned as engagement and social tokens. They unlock rewards and special abilities within the app. When asked if the creators intend to create an in-app NFT marketplace, they opposed the idea.

While TikTok has made some questionable moves toward the crypto space in the recent past, this is a giant step in the right direction. Audius is paving the way for a new future of an artist first music industry and a blockchain-powered digital world.
