Bears. Beets. Battlestar Galactica. Bitcoin.
Rainn Wilson — known to millions of The Office fans as prickly paper salesman Dwight Schrute — has urged crypto enthusiasts to donate their BTC to a good cause.
He’s offering a shoutout on Twitter to people who pledge at least $1,000 in crypto during December to the Mona Foundation, a nonprofit that supports grassroots education to women and girls worldwide.
Big donors who contribute 10 BTC (worth about $190,000 at current prices) will enjoy a virtual dinner with Schrute Wilson, along with their family. Donations can also be made in Ether and 10 other cryptocurrencies.
In a video posted by The Giving Block — which held an ambitious drive to raise $1 million for charities on Dec. 1 during the #BitcoinTuesday challenge — Wilson said:
“Hi there, my name is not Rainn Wilson, nor is it Dwight Schrute. My name is Satoshi Nakamoto, inventor of Bitcoin… that’s what I would say had I invented Bitcoin, which I did not.”
The actor also said that crypto is “your best bet” for making a tax-efficient contribution. That’s because donors can avoid the capital gains tax they would have paid if the crypto was sold beforehand — resulting in a larger donation and a higher deduction.
Dozens of other charities also accept crypto donations through The Giving Block, including Save the Children, Friends of Notre-Dame de Paris, Junior Achievement of New York, the National Black Chamber of Commerce, WaterAid America, and the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Wilson has made similar appeals for BTC donations before — reaching out to “Bitcoin owners, cryptocurrency fanatics and alternative financing fans” in November 2019. Back then, he said:
“I hope you’ll consider giving your worthless cryptocurrency to the Mona Foundation. As you know, Mark Cuban said that he would rather have bananas than Bitcoin — and so please donate your bananas. Thank you so much.”
