Status.im has recently released a lightweight Sharding client, Nimbus. This client is supposed to scale the Ethereum protocol and to help in the creation of a better ecosystem that will be faster and scalable for decentralized applications.
We are excited to announce our partnership with the team behind the programming language @nim_lang. The language suits itself well to light client implementation and is ideal for our research initiative Nimbus. Learn more about this partnership on our blog https://t.co/IxusBXh6hy

Since its inception and launch, which happened in 2017, Status has focused on improving the adoption of the Ethereum network by using a client with an intuitive interface to create a better overall experience for the user and to handle dapps more efficiently.
Status is very similar to WeChat, a popular app in China. WeChat is a mobile messaging app that is currently being used by more than 500 million people and let the users message other people, as expected, but also has functionalities like being able to make payments and run apps.
In comparison, Status does pretty much the same: enables the user to send messages, pay and run dapps. However, unlike WeChat, Status only lets dapps based on the Ethereum network be used. They are decentralized instead of the centralized options of WeChat.
Ethereum’s Scaling Problems And Status’ SolutionThe main issue that the platform has found until now is that it takes a large capacity to handle so many transactions per second, which are necessary because the dapps demand transactions to work properly.
Just to know how much the platform would have to be better to actually be scalable, the former Goldman Sachs executive and co-founder of Coinbase, Fred Ehrsam, has stated that to scale Ethereum to the level of Facebook or WeChat, it would have to be able to make 750,000 transactions per second. At the moment, the Ethereum network can make only 13.
Based on these affirmations, it is clear that the Ethereum blockchain is nowhere near the level in which it needs to be if it wants to be really popular and, therefore, it requires significant improvements.
To reach this distant goal, Status has revealed plans to use Sharding, one of the main scaling solutions available right now for the Ethereum community. Sharding, along with Plasma, are the two most popular scaling solutions right now. Obviously, they are still not enough but are better than 13 transactions per second.
Recently, Status has made a partnership with the Nimbus developers, which are focused on helping to solve the scalability problems that the software is facing at the moment. Nimbus, according to the Status team, will impact on how the Ethereum client and ecosystem are updated to become more resilient.
A Long Road Towards A Million Transactions Per SecondThe co-founder of the Ethereum blockchain, Vitalik Buterin, is positive about the development of the Sharding and Plasma solutions as a way to increase the capability of the Ethereum network. According to him, it is possible to increase from 13 transactions to 1 million by using proper scaling solutions, which can allow the Ethereum network to become as big as the social media giants.
Recently, blockchain projects like 0x, Status and Zilliqa have been progressing a lot in testing scalable solutions. Most of them are based in second-layers that run on top of the original ones and are able to increase the speed of the whole network.
