According to their official website, Status is a messenger, crypto wallet, and Web3 browser built with state-of-the-art technology. It is an open-source project that has contributors from all over the world. Thus, developers, designers, educators, content creators, enthusiasts, and virtually everyone has open access to the platform.

The primary goal of Status is to serve as a secure communication tool that upholds human rights. Thus, the project enables community money, community law and through privacy, preserve culture. By offering a secure messaging service, the platform ensures that they do not censure or block messages. Also, a user has the option of remaining anonymous, with the recipient the only person with the ability to view messages.

In addition to this, Status offers secure financial transactions to its users. The platform allows users to send, store, and receive cryptocurrencies via the Status wallet. The private keys remain safe, and Status only carries out a transaction if the owner of the private keys initiates and confirms the process.

With Status’s web3, third parties do not have access to users’ data and browsing information. Thus, allowing users to surf through the internet without having to worry about someone harvesting their data.

Whisper Protocol, Perfect Forward Secrecy and Browser Privacy Mode

To achieve its numerous goals, Status is upgrading and implementing some security measures. In the first instance, the team has the Whisper Protocol. This is a peer-to-peer gossip protocol that allows sending and receiving messages with a darkness mode via a multicast dark routing.

Secondly, Status has the Perfect Forward Secrecy, which is a feature of specific key-agreement protocols that ensure that a user’s session keys are intact even when the participants’ private keys are unsafe. Therefore, a third party who manages to get hold of a user’s private keys cannot decrypt their past messages.

The lasts technical security implementation by Status is the browser privacy mode that it enables by default. With this feature, dApps will need to seek for a user’s permission before connecting to their wallet.

To avoid controversies, Status is working with independent audit firms to help check and affirm their security level. With Trail of Bits and ETHsecurity they can keep abreast with the latest security updates and make improvements where needed while sharing audit results and findings publicly.
