The Philadelphia 76ers have become Socios’s first partnership with an NBA team as the fan engagement platform expands deeper into the United States.
The Chiliz-owned fan-centered app has already partnered up with numerous major sports leagues and teams worldwide. Their bread and butter thus far have been in the international soccer market, however, they are branching out and have their sights set on North America. Socios has already taken a big first step toward that goal by making deals with the UFC, New Jersey Devils, and Roush Fenway Racing.
The deal with the Devils helped the 76ers partnership come to fruition as both teams are owned by the same company, Harris Blitzer Sports and Entertainment. The deal with the Sixers starts with the 2021-22 season that is scheduled to tip-off on October 19.
Chief Revenue Officer from the Sixers, Katie O’Reilly, spoke about the collaboration between the organization and fan-app. “We are thrilled to be the first team in the NBA to partner with Socios.com and break through the global blockchain category here in the States. They have built a strong portfolio of partners from around the world across a diverse landscape of sport and fans.”
O’Reilly went on to talk about the team and its owner’s goal of spurring on innovation and change within the NBA and partnering with entities sharing those values. She also announced that Philly is looking forward to introducing fans to the project in the coming months. The news brief explains that, as team partners, Socios will be “integrated into advertising and TV-visible signage throughout the area during 76ers games.”
The app will also be allowed to leverage the team’s logos on their platform. The brand will also be featured on the Sixers website and social media accounts in the hopes of integrating “unique pre- and post-game content.”
Socios app and fan tokensThe backbone of the Socios app and the team partnerships is the fan tokens. They are new digital assets directed at sports fans that give them the power to influence real-life decisions by their favorite teams. While those decisions are not going to be whether the Sixers should trade away Ben Simmons or who to start at Center tonight, they are still things that fans care about.
The tokens mostly function as a vote on polls in which Socios and the teams jointly operate. The polls range from things like changing the name of a training field to commemorate a legendary player, fun challenges for the players to take part in during downtime, and voting on designs for a new team bus.
While these are not game-changing boardroom votes, they leave some team decisions up to fans. Each team has its token on the platform, so you can buy a stake in multiple teams in different leagues or sports and be a part of the decision of what message the captain writes on his armband for the next game.
Other major partners that Socios has agreements with include soccer clubs such as FC Barcelona, PSG, AC Milan as well as the Argentinian national team as well as racing, eSports, and cricket teams.
