Social Media Influencer Sells Her ‘Love’ as an NFT for $250K

2021-8-1 13:10

A Social media influencer has sold her love as an NFT to an unknown bidder for $250,000.

Marta Rentel from Poland had decided to join the non-fungible token (NFT) fad by selling off what she described as her love. Surprisingly, the NFT raked in $250,000 for Rentel. The winner of Rentel’s NFT will now have the opportunity to go on a dinner date with the influencer.

Rentel commented on the sale of her NFT, which she dubbed as selling her ‘love’ by saying,  “Nothing on the internet is physical, it’s a part of my online persona.”

Rentel admits that the idea to sell her love was inspired by Italian artist Salvatore Garau, who sold an invisible sculpture for $18,300.

Rentel further described her idea, saying, ““For me, selling digital love is empowering for women because we can love without compromising our freedom and individuality,” she said. “Digital love is transactional, but so is marrying a man just because he is wealthy and stable, right?”

Rentel will be donating some funds of the sale to charity. Rentel does not discount the possibility of finding true love through the sale, saying, “If I manage to successfully mint my Digital Love and find my second half, then why shouldn’t other feelings and emotions just follow?” Currently, the winner is unknown to Rentel.

NFT industry booming

The growth of the NFT industry continues to see wider-spread adoption. Sports athletes are joining in on the craze, with Brazilian football legend Ronaldinho recently announcing his very own NFT collection.

The Dallas Symphony Orchestra have also made moves into the industry with the launch of its own NFT collection that will help support musicians on furlough during the Covid-19 Pandemic.

Coca-Cola recently announced it will be auctioning its first collection of NFTs, the collection will include digital apparel that can be worn virtually in the Decentraland metaverse.

Actress Mila Kunis successfully launched her Stoner Cats NFT sale this past week, selling out in 35 minutes and raising $8 million towards future growth of the Stoner Cats television series.

On Radical Markets

Recently I had the fortune to have received an advance copy of Eric Posner and Glen Weyl’s new book, Radical Markets, which could be best described as an interesting new way of looking at the subject that is sometimes called “political economy” - tackling the big questions of how markets and politics and society intersect.
