Philippines May Be Allowing Blockchain Technologies To Run Elections
The company responsible for the potential blockchain usage by the Filipino government is Smartmatic, an advanced blockchain technology company.
In the past, the Philippines have had issues with elections being run. In an attempt to secure the electronic voting system, put in place, the Filipino government is looking into blockchain technology specialist Smartmatic for answers. The block innovator is now building machines used for voting, to create a new transparency and authenticity in the island country’s government elections.
Reports were made in local Filipino newspapers about the new vote counting machines or VCMs as they are called, to help eliminate fraud like that which potentially happened in the last elections.
Elections from 2016 are still under investigation, as several executives and members of the government who participated in elections have been accused of fraud. The government isn't jumping on it just yet, instead they're putting in thorough time, research and development into determining as to whether the vote counting machines will be secure enough for a fully run Filipino government election. More specifically, the portion in question is the blockchain, and as to whether or not Smartmatic can guarantee it's authentic and transparent execution when voting.
If they can make the new blockchain technology work, Smartmatic will be in the spotlight for sure, potentially securing Filipino citizens votes are counted accurately in May of 2019. Blockchain technology is known to be highly secure even being becoming more popular than that of the cryptocurrency which it was built for. Governments and militaries all over the world are beginning to utilize the technology for their own specific purposes. So, it comes as no surprise that Philippines would do the same. The technology is highly trusted in the cryptocurrency community and is also becoming very trustworthy in the eye of the mainstream public as well, gaining popular vote by everyday people in the country. Security issues and fraud are highly unlikely to occur when using blockchain technology developed by smart Mattox.
The company has already successfully used the tech to complete government-related operations in Scandinavia, specifically Norway with an 85% voter response rate. With the new tech, voters could actually Place their votes at a secure online website, created by Smartmatics. This is likely why the Philippines took notice of the company and are preparing to potentially use them.
Even Switzerland known for their heightened security, has used blockchain elections with success. It's likely that we'll see more and more of this happening across the globe as governments develop their own personal technology they deem safe. Potentially, technology like the blockchain, could completely replace normal voting procedures in countries like Russia and the United States.
