Russia’s Roscosmos state corporation is implementing a platform based on blockchain technology to protect the intellectual property of organizations in the rocket and space industry.

The corporation’s website stated that it started using the feature on the Waves Enterprise blockchain to identify violations of intellectual property rights of firms and institutions within the industry.

The solution also has another benefit of providing non-monetary rewards while using smart contracts to detect IP infringement cases. As part of the reward program, the participants will be given “cosmotokens” which they can exchange later for merchandise from the agency.

This is not the first time blockchain-based Waves Enterprise has been deployed in Russia. Last year, the firm offered its blockchain expertise to develop a blockchain-based platform for the Russian parliamentary election.

The project will attract several participants

Roscosmos added that the feature is expected to attract several companies within the industry and probably others outside. It will also attract several participants, including patent attorneys, patent specialists, lawyers, and citizens who are passionate about reducing copyright infringements.

However, the test will be undertaken before the project is fully launched in public. The test will invite students and scholars specializing in law from several universities, including St. Petersburg State Economic University and Moscow State Law Academy.

Roscosmos stated that testing will enable future specialists to acquire practical skills when working with real objects of intellectual property.

IP Guard to detect violations

The space agency has started testing IP protection solutions built on the Waves Enterprise blockchain. The solution is termed IP Guard and will be used in detecting violations of Roscosmos IP and other industry organizations.

According to Roscosmos, the tool will come in handy for maintaining and verifying a database of IP data objects. It will also help to coordinate IP experts such as auditors, patent specialists, and lawyers.

Chief commercial officer of Waves Enterprise, Igor Kuzmichev, stated that verification possibility and data immutability are the most notable properties of the blockchain. However, these properties cannot be guaranteed by centralized registers, he added.
