Anthony Pompliano is known as being the founder of Morgan Creek, but he is also a major enthusiasts of Bitcoin. Despite the downturn in the Bitcoin market, along with all altcoins, he has decided to put his money where his mouth is and a new bet that is being called Buffett bet 2.0. The bet includes a $1 million wager, based on the S&P 500 Index performance against cryptocurrency.
Nouriel Roubini, an infamous naysayer in the crypto world, quickly criticized both the bet and Pompliano himself. In response, Pompliano challenged him to take an opposing side in the bet. No sooner than Pompliano responded, Roubini went on Twitter as well to say that Pompliano is “changing goal posts” and “talking books all day.”
The post said,
“What is the return on that index in 2018? A negative 85% or 95%? And is the bet starting January 1st 2018 since u predicted BTC at 50k by year end? Or are you changing the goal posts as you have been cheating all along & talking your book all year while making Bagholders lose 90%?”
Pompliano didn’t take long to respond. On the tweet, Pompliano replied,
“Talk is cheap. You taking the bet or going to Monday morning quarterback this one? If you want to check out the index, you can see it here digitalassetindexfund.com”
Obviously this wasn’t the end. On December 10th, Roubini stoked the fire of the argument when he tweeted,
“You take bets only when there is no counter-party risk ie when the side losing the bet is still there to pay it. The loser pompous @APompliano who lost 80% for investors in his shitcoin fund is only seeking attention with his bet. His fund will be BUST/GONRE well before 10 years.”
Calling Roubini a “candidate for worst call of the decade,” Pompliano tweeted,
“I should be charging you for all this relevancy and exposure you’re getting from using my name. Just another freeloader nocoiner who has been calling for Bitcoin’s death since $58.”
Mark W. Yusko, Morgan Creek Digital co-founder, felt the need to chime in as well, saying,
“There is ZERO counter-party risk since #BuffettBet structure calls for both sides funding half up front and money is invested in bonds until the end of the bet. Time to stop talking and put your #MoneyWhereYourMouthIs”
Though some commenters on the thread seem to be in favor of Roubini getting involved, the chairman and chief investment officer of OSAM, Jim O’Shaughnessy, bet against the cryptocurrencies as well. As a result, he told the rest of the Twitter followers that he is working with Yusko, Pompliano, and Patrick Oshag to coordinate a meeting in the next week to discuss the bets. However, his later tweets suggested that the culmination of a bet at all was unlikely.
