Established cryptocurrency exchange service Binance is showing some love to the victims of the disastrous flood by donating $1 million to aid them in their dire situation. Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao took to Twitter to make his heartwarming announcement stating that they will be donating the said amount in either Binance Coin, Bitcoin or Japanese Yen.
Zhao said in his Twitter thread:
“Given the short time, we had to keep this very simple for this time. We will build something more systematic later. Our team is contacting local authorities to figure out final delivery logistics too.”
A Good CauseThe Binance CEO’s relief efforts were met with an abundance of positive reception from other Twitter users who praised him for his noble cause. Even Japanese Twitter users themselves expressed their appreciation for Zhao’s heartfelt gesture as they applaud the Binance CEO through his thread.
One user used the opportunity to ask Zhao if they would soon be able to donate cryptocurrency of any kind via Binance, in which Zhao responded saying:
“will add a feature, we originally wanted to make a ‘donate dust’ button, but didn’t have the resource priority to do it, when it wasn’t clear what to donate to. We didn’t want to hold the funds long and potentially keep getting asked.”
However, Binance isn’t stopping there. The company is, now, urging everyone including their “crypto friends and partners” to follow their lead in their relief efforts as well.
According to the official website, willing participants could either make an anonymous donation or named donation. In addition, the website stressed that “all outgoing transactions from the Binance donation address will be explained by Binance and used for charity purposes only.”
Devastating Calamity AftermathBinance’s donations and efforts would be a great help to the victims especially since the massive flood had a devastating outcome that greatly affected Japan’s Ehime and Hiroshima prefectures. The Guardian reported that the torrential rain that caused the flood was deemed “historic” as there hasn’t been such a heavy rainfall in the country in decades.
The unfortunate incident is considered the worst weather-related calamity in the country since the consecutive typhoons that devastated Japan back in 2011. The number of casualties has risen to an alarming 94 people.
Reports stated that the number of casualties is expected to reach beyond 100. On top of all that, 58 people are still reportedly missing. The devastating aftermath also left 80 people stranded while over 30,000 people were admitted to emergency shelters.
