Reddit has announced that it is scaling Community Points with Ethereum scaling solution Arbitrum. The social media network said it deployed a new Layer-2 rollup on Thursday using Arbitrum technology.
Before migrating to the Ethereum mainnet, Reddit is testing the scaling network on top of Rinkeby.
Last year, Reddit launched Community Points, tokens on the second-largest network to give ownership and control to users. Then through a Scaling Bake-Off, they worked with the crypto community to figure out how to bring these tokens to the Ethereum mainnet. Arbitrum noted,
“The Bake-off was a significant step for the ecosystem as a whole in bringing the traditional web to the Ethereum ecosystem.”
And after research and review of multiple projects, Reddit has chosen Arbitrum’s optimistic rollups as the most promising scaling technology for them due to it being decentralized, developer-friendly, and having broad ecosystem support.
Reddit has since then been “working closely” with Offchain Labs, the team behind Arbitrum.
While a significant milestone, a lot remains to be done as they are looking for engineers to build a “more decentralized Internet” at a Reddit-level scale.
Reddit’s goal is to “cross the chasm to mainstream adoption by bringing millions of users to blockchain,” it said. As for Arbitrum, it aims to bring the next wave of users to Ethereum and scale communities.
