PSV Eindhoven, a Dutch Eredivisie football club, has signed a two-year sponsorship deal with crypto trading platform Anycoin Direct. The club announced this news on August 17, noting that this agreement will make it the first major football club in the European Union to receive the full sponsorship amount in Bitcoin (BTC/USD).
According to the announcement, this deal seeks to boost crypto awareness and promote Anycoin Direct in Europe. PSV claims that several foreign crypto companies were after the same deal. However, it decided to join hands with Anycoin Direct because it is a trusted company in the Eindhoven area. Per the club, choosing Anycoin Direct offered it a reliable international partner with local roots.
Reportedly, PSV intends to HODL the BTC it receives and has already set up crypto wallets to store the crypto. Despite taking a bullish approach to crypto, the club did not disclose how much the deal is worth.
Commenting on this partnership, Frans Janssen, PSV Eindhoven’s Commercial Director, said the crypto space offers numerous possibilities and a promising future. He added that PSV strives to remain innovative, and embracing crypto fits well into its plans.
Crypto platforms continue pushing for the mass adoption of digital assetsIn the announcement, Lennert Vlemmings, Anycoin Direct’s COO, said,
Growing up in the region PSV has always been very close to me. As a technology company from the Brainport area we are very excited to be working with PSV. The payment in Bitcoin marks the next step for the adoption of cryptocurrency in the EU.
This news comes after PSV’s first dabbled in the nascent sector in April this year by auctioning an NFT of its Europe cup 1 final victory on Benfica. While the club has claimed the title of being the first EU club to accept the total amount of sponsorship funds in BTC, it is not the first Dutch football club to forge a strategic partnership with a crypto platform.
In June this year, Alkmaar Zaanstreek, commonly known as Az Alkmaar, signed a four-year deal with Bitcoin Meester. The agreement saw Az Alkmaar accept some of its sponsorship funds in BTC. The club announced that it would hold the BTC it receives in its balance sheet and become the first Dutch club to do so.
Apart from the PSV and Az Alkmaar, other football clubs that have embraced the crypto and NFT spaces include, but are not limited to PSG, Manchester City, and Everton.
