Privacy-Focused, Brave Browser Launches “Anti-Tracking” Search Engine

Privacy-oriented browser Brave is extending its “privacy to all” goal with the launch of Brave Search, expected to rival Google Search and Microsoft Bing. Brave Search launched its beta version on Tuesday, allowing Brave users and other browser users to enjoy an “in-breed privacy-preserving search engine.”

Brave Search promises users full control of their online experience and enhanced privacy. Built on a fully independent index (rather than integrating Google’s or Microsoft index), the search engine does not track users, searches, or clicks, the statement by Brave reads.

The search engine is a product of Tailcat, a search engine developer acquired by Brave in March. Since the acquisition, the test and beta platforms have been tested by over 30,000 unique users monthly – as Brave continues to close in on Google’s massive user base. This boosted the total monthly active users on the browser to 32 million users, a 28% rise since the Tailcat acquisition.

Brave Search follows the recent launch of a privacy-preserving news search engine, Brave Today, aiming to topple Google News’ dominance.

Over the years, Brave browser has grown as the privacy-focused browser across the globe by ensuring data privacy and independence of users is fully respected, Brendan Erlich, CEO, and co-founder of Brave, stated. Erlich said in the statement,

“Unlike older search engines that track and profile users, and newer search engines that are mostly a skin on older engines and don’t have their own indexes, Brave Search offers a new way to get relevant results with a community-powered index, while guaranteeing privacy.”

Brave Search will use an independent index to ensure maximum privacy, ensuring a fully anonymous, transparent search. Additionally, the engine will also introduce a search independence metric – “a ratio of results exclusively from Brave’s search index.” While Brave still works to build its search results, some results will be fetched from third-party search engines, but no user tracking will take place, the statement further reads.

At launch, Brave Search beta is available on all Brave browsers (iOS, Android, and browser versions) in addition to the already available search engines. Users on other browsers can also use the privacy-search engine at search.brave.com. The beta platform will not include any ads, but users will select ad-free paid search and ad-supported free search engines once the mainnet launch is complete.
