Pistoia Alliance Will Now Include Data Sharing, Identity, and Integrity in Blockchain Project

Established in 2007, the Pistoia Alliance is an organization that collectively holds representatives from many pharmaceutical companies, including Novaritz, Pfizer, and GSK. The not-for-profit company was created with the original intention of bringing in new technology that would help the participating companies with their research and development.

According to a recent press release on a blockchain project that the organization is working on, Pistoia Alliance will now be including data sharing, data identity, and data integrity.

The new blockchain project is aimed at including blockchain technology as a way to verify the sources used during research, while also maintaining the integrity of the information and to share information found with other representatives. Before this project, the focus was on showing the blockchain industry all of the information they could learn about blockchain technology, considering that a lack of knowledge is primarily behind the lack of mass adoptions. In a recent survey that Pistoia cited, one-fifth of the survey respondents felt that blockchain lacked any value that it could bring to a company, saying that a standard database can do the same.

Steve Arlington, the president of the Pistoia Alliance, said,

“Much of the industry is still at the ‘discussion’ stage of blockchain, we want to move beyond this and take action that actively supports members and leads to tangible outcomes that will benefit R&D, accelerate innovation and support the discovery of new treatments.”

The healthcare industry has been able to benefit from the use of distributed ledger technology (DLT), making it possible to easily share medical data without compromising security. The Myongji Hospital in South Korea recently collaborated with BICube, a Korean IT company, to use DLT in the information exchange system in the country for healthcare. Per the memorandum of understanding (MoU), the goal is to

“build a hybrid cloud [platform] that combines a public cloud and a private cloud.”

The Austrian government has recently taken interest as well by financially supporting Lancor Scientific in their cancer research, implementing blockchain technology in the detection of cancer. As a result of the support, the company has managed to create a device that can sense multiple types of cancer, which are then recorded on a blockchain as screening results.
