Developer Nik Bougalis talked about restarting of devnet.
Developer Nik Bougalis tweeted about restarting of devnet. He also apologized for the network problems:
So, good news first: the devnet is back up and running, so feel free to jump into the sandbox and play, play, play! But before you do, let me say that we are sorry we broke the devnet! We didn’t mean to.
The cause of the failure was also named:
In fact, the culprit was a heartless script. It was programmed to do good: clean up disk space. Left to its own devices it turned its cold, heartless, menacing eye to a poor, unsuspecting directory and did what it was supposed to do: terminate it. HASTA LA VISTA DEVNET!
You rightly complained; we should have noticed this quicker and resolved it within minutes. It took us longer, but it’s now back. What we learned: first, the error reporting built into the code isn’t great. More importantly, the system, as a whole, is robust and resilient.
This is important because it shows that the system did what it was supposed to do: it prioritized safety over liveness, and waited for quorum. As soon as the servers that were affected by the cleanup script were restored, the devnet sprung back to life.
