American basketball team Sacramento Kings will mine Ethereum, the second largest cryptocurrency in the world, in an arena-based data center. The team intends to mine cryptocurrencies for its MiningForGood initiative, which is designed to help local communities.
A New Dawn in Community ServiceThe Kings have a long history of experimenting with innovative technologies. The team will be using crypto-mining machines made by MiningStore to mine Ethereum. A share of these coins will be donated to MiningForGood. The NBA team hasn’t specified exactly how much it will be donating to the cause, but the percentage is expected to be significant.
The initiative will start by helping Black communities through the Build. Black. Coalition. They will impart technology education and assist in workforce development. Note that even after shaving off almost half of its value since reaching an all-time high six months ago, one Ethereum coin still trades for over $400.
Can the Project Survive? Ethereum mining concept. Source: shutterstock.comIf the Ethereum costs fall further, mining could become less profitable for the team. Also, electricity and other fixed costs will have to be factored in before the team can derive any profits. It is a power-hungry process and has frequently been criticized for its environmental consequences too.
As the block difficulty level keeps increasing over time, mining would become more difficult too. It would be harder to maintain profitability for the team, let alone donating to a cause.
Though the actual math of the MiningForGood initiative is unknown, the team is hopefully relying on a competitive model to earn and is expecting the prices to go up in the near future.
