A new report published on Bleeping Computer showed the intricate difficulties of using long and complicated digital wallet addresses. Over 2.3 million Bitcoin addresses are being monitored by clipboard hijackers who take advantage of the complexity of wallet addresses to dupe users.
Once a user copies a wallet address to the clipboard, the hackers can replace it with their own address before the user pastes it elsewhere. Because of this, a user ends up sending coins to an unintended address under the pretense of a legitimate transaction.
Clipboard Hijacking MalwareBitcoin wallet addresses are long and complicated. As they are difficult to remember, users simply copy-paste details on their computer. Malware takes advantage of this condition. If the user doesn’t double check for accuracy, his coins can be stolen in an instant.
Cryptocurrency clipboard Hijackers are malware that monitors the Windows clipboard for Bitcoin wallet addresses. As soon as an address is detected, the malware quickly replaces it with the address of the hacker, making the user send their coins to an unknown entity.
A previous study shows that these hijackers were monitoring the 400-600 Bitcoin addresses. However, last week’s report has inflated the number to millions.
How the Malware Infects a System? The modus operandi of hijackers is detailed in a video. The All-Radio 4.27 Portable malware package contains the infection. Once a package installs, a DLL named d3dx11_31.dll will download to Windows Temp folder. It also executes a DirectX11 autorun as soon as a user logs on to the computer.
The DLL is executed using rundll32.exe with the following command, “rundll32 C:\Users\[user-name]\AppData\Local\Temp\d3dx11_31.dll,includes_func_runnded.” This malware runs in the background and is difficult to spot. Users must use due diligence while sending coins using Bitcoin wallet addresses.
