Monero’s Riccardo Says He Picked Monero Because It Is Not Based on the Bitcoin Code
Riccardo Spagni, a core member of Monero team, was on an episode of Whatbitciondid. During the interview, he spoke extensively about Monero. One of the issues he discussed was the privacy aspect of Monero.
The interview also covered many other topics that included similarities between BTC and Monero (XRM) and why privacy matters.
Why He Picked MoneroRiccardo spoke about why he decided to pick Monero. He stated that one major factor which drove him to pick Monero was that it was not based on the BTC code. He said that this was the main reason for him to think twice about Monero.
According to Riccardo, cloning or forking Bitcoin often leads to issues that are not fun to deal with. Riccardo added that cloning or forking bitcoin was taking a decade of proven history and fudging with the incentives. In essence, this was slapping lipstick on a pig or adding functionality that had no real incentives. Riccardo said this was just not interesting to him.
He further stated that Monero was new even though the code was not based on mature code. According to him, the privacy aspect of Monero was quite important to him. He stated that Monero was making concrete moves for privacy. XRM was helping to push the privacy barrier forward.
The Bitcoin MaximalistRiccardo also discussed the Bitcoin maximalist community who were frowning upon all other altcoins. In fact, those who were in this community called altcoins shitcoins, except Monero. The main reason for this, according to him was that those who were involved in BTC and XRM early on faced similar issues.
At the start, Riccardo explained they did not get anything on a platter. They did not have some slick mobile wallet written by someone else that they could fork and switch the name. Everything that they did for Monero was built from the ground up, including the wallet.
The similarity Of BTC To XRMRiccardo still remembers the early days of Bitcoin. In fact, when Bitcoin was launched, it was not smooth at all. It looked like something that came out of Windows 1995. This was quite similar to what the Monero team had to face. They needed to figure out CPU mining and a command-line wallet. Besides that, the whole database was stored in RAM of just four to five gigabytes for about the first six months.
According to Riccardo Spagni, all the nasty stuff that they had to deal with, Bitcoin had to handle also. These reasons are why the Bitcoin maximalists have so much respect for Monero. They understand what the founders of BTC had to undergo in order to give the world a decentralized crypto coin that could be transacted from anywhere in the world.
However, most other altcoins attempt to ride the cocktails of successful networks. In some cases, they end up worse since there are not enough coders interested in their copied and modified code. It is the main reason the Bitcoin Maximalists have so little respect for them.
