Mobile apps that are utilizing blockchain technology could hit iPhone and Android devices by the end of the year. Forbes shared that digital market research specialists believe that there will be a “significant expansion” in the number of decentralized apps for mobile devices by the end of the year. However, developers will first have to deal with the current underwhelming number of decentralized app users before it could reach its potential.
Decentralizing the Mobile MarketWindsor Holden, head of forecasting in digital marketing firm Juniper Research, stated that the arrival of such apps “will occur in much the same way as the existing app ecosystem.”
He added:
“The consumer would see nothing of the blockchain, as far as they’re concerned, it’s just another app.”
Holden also predicted the type of decentralized apps that will most likely catch on would involve product-tracking and identity verification. However, the apps will have to face a number of roadblocks before it could garner mainstream recognition.
Holden pointed out that, based on the traffic of decentralized apps, there seems to be a meager volume of users for these apps, even reaching below a hundred in total.
Looming ChallengesAnother issue that decentralized apps face is its limited scope and capacity to cater to millions of users. The source reveals that, in its current state, networks can only handle a limited number of transactions at a time. Some fear that attempting to upscale blockchain technology could potentially beat the whole purpose of decentralization.
Meanwhile, mobile users might see the proliferation of decentralized apps on the market soon enough. However, what they won’t be seeing any time soon is the arrival of cryptocurrency mining apps.
According to TheVerge, Apple has placed an active ban on all App Store apps that involve cryptocurrency mining. Cryptocurrency mining isn’t entirely effective on mobile like it is on computer rigs. The limited GPU on Apple’s mobile devices basically makes cryptocurrency mining on mobile devices pretty useless.
