On July 17 and 18, Blokt attended the Beyond Blocks Summit Seoul, the flagship event for Korea Blockchain Week, and it did not disappoint its attendees. Tickets sold out leading up to the event, which had 2,000+ attendees and 50+ industry-leading speakers including Michael Arrington, Michael Novogratz, and JH Kim.
Talking to CNBC Crypto Trader at the event, TechCrunch founder and former co-editor Michael Arrington said that he thinks “we are still going to hit $25,000 this year easily.” He stated that if a cryptocurrency ETF was to happen “that would give custody options to the institutional investors they don’t have now” implying that institutional money would help drive up the price. Arrington launched his own digital-asset management firm, Arrington XRP Capital, in November 2017.
Attendees at the summit were kept entertained with visionary speakers discussing the most important topics in the blockchain industry. And spoilt with buffet lunches, ice cream, tea, coffee, and beer. Even the official after party at a club in Gangnam offered a free bar for attendees serving beers and cocktails. All this, plus the high caliber of the attendees, really made it a great event for networking.
Blokt spoke to Nathan Millard, CEO of G3 Partners, who provides marketing services for blockchain and cryptocurrency projects, including for ICON, Korea’s most successful initial coin offering to date.
Talking of the event, Nathan said:
“Beyond Blocks was one of the first truly global technology conferences I’ve attended in Korea. The quality of attendees was especially high, with many high-profile brands and individuals from the global blockchain space in attendance and an impressive, international speaker line-up. Many conference attendees are still in Korea (a week later), progressing with fundraising and partnership activities and exploring Korea as a market opportunity. That is unheard of, in my experience working in the space since 2012 (with other conferences, most people that have flown intend to leave the day after the event).”
There were also many projects exhibiting at the event that attendees could network with and see live demonstrations from. Exhibitors included Orbs, Bezant, Electrify, PumaPay, Beam, Ledger, Reitium and many more.
Alex Topchishvili, Chief Marketing Officer for Totle, the decentralized exchange aggregator and portfolio manager, who was exhibiting at the event commented:
“The Totle booth saw non-stop action throughout the 2-day summit, with a wide array of local and international crypto investors, traders, media, and enthusiasts stopping by our booth to see our product and hear our story. We were thoroughly impressed by the depth of knowledge and sophistication exhibited by the local community. We found attendees to be well versed in concepts like decentralized trading, interoperability, and peer-to-peer exchanges, leading to many productive conversations.”
Several different exchanges also exhibited at the event, including Huobi, a leading digital asset exchange; EMX, which offers users futures trading with cryptocurrencies; DX.Exchange, a fully regulated crypto exchange with fiat support; Capdax, with its revolutionary social trading feature; GCOX, a celebrity token exchange; and BitHero, a gamified mobile platform for live and virtual trading.
Also speaking at the event was Michael Novogratz, Galaxy Digital Capital Management founder and CEO. Like Arrington, Novogratz also made bullish comments on both blockchain and cryptocurrencies. Talking to CNBC’s Crypto Trader, he stated that:
“I think we are building a really nice bottom for the next move up. I think the next move up is going to need custody from a trusted source, it’s going to need a little more regulatory clarity, you know, we won’t take out $10,000 without those two things, because that’s what brings the institutional investors in, but we’re going to get there.”
On the 17th of July, the day the Beyond Blocks Summit started, Bitcoin’s price broke out rising 8.5%. Bitcoin’s price has not looked back since, now currently up nearly 23% since the Summit started. Is this a coincidence? Yes likely, however, the optimism and enthusiasm towards blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies could certainly be felt at the event, with many envisioning a bright future is ahead.
The next Beyond Blocks Summit will be held in Bangkok on the 26th and 27th of November. Full details can be found on the Beyond Blocks website.
