Formula 1 team McLaren is collaborating with Turkish-based crypto exchange Bitci.com to launch the team’s official fan token.
While there is a non-fungible token deal in Formula 1, it will be the first time a team is initiating a direct fan token in the car racing industry.
The first of its kind in Formula 1According to the announcement, the token will be offered on the Bitci Chain. However, the partners are still in the process of launching the token, which means the benefits of the tokens to the fans have not been revealed. But it will have a similar use case with other sports fan tokens.
Fan token is already prevalent in football, where clubs like Barcelona, Paris Saint Germain, and Juventus all have fan tokens their supporters can use to make a meaningful contribution to their respective clubs. With the fan token, they have the opportunity to participate in some voting decisions within the team.
England’s Manchester City recently joined the list of football clubs with fan tokens, after signing a deal with Socios.com for $CITY fan tokens.
The fan tokens also give their owners access to play mobile games, collect rewards, and access promotions.
A great way for sports teams to earn revenueThe partnership with the Formula 1 team also means Bitci.com will have its logo embedded in the drivers’ helmets as well as their race cars.
Like other sports, the absence of fans affected Formula 1 greatly due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many events were grounded at the early stage of the pandemic control.
Formula 1 organizers had to limit ticket sales and canceled races on some occasions. But blockchain solutions like fan tokens and collectibles are a great way for sports teams to gain part of the revenues lost in fan ticketing. It’s also a new method of exploring different ways to engage fans.
