The foundation to a sound, online community is the ability to communicate and exchange accurate content among members. In particular, an open source with limited control is ideal, as it would allow each and every individual from seeing a complete picture of the crypto sphere as opposed to just the bad or just the good.
Social networking and online news platform, Twitter has been under heat for multiple reasons, some being, excessive presence of “ether giveaway bots”, increased centralization and suspension of accounts that voice opposing views. An example of this was found via a Bitcoin Magazine post, which revealed Twitter’s role in momentarily restricting, bitcoin maximalist and BHB Network’s Giacomo Zucco’s account.
Today, an alternative to Twitter supposedly exists, which is none other than Mastodon. Mastodon is a social networking platform that relies on open-web protocols. Most importantly, it has been created to support a decentralized system. Another facet that makes Mastodon superior than Twitter is its total characters of 500, which will allow one to openly express what needs to be shared – neither worrying over how many characters still remain nor limiting their opinions.
Furthermore, Mastodon’s “instances” or multiple, miniature communities which allow users from each group to set rules is surely unique. Members from one instance can also communicate with members from another instance.
The entire communicating process seems to resemble that of Twitter, as Mastodon’s equivalency to tweets are “toots”, retweets are “boosts” and likes are “favorites”.
Since the Bitcoin Mastodon’s existence, Bitcoin Magazine reported that the decentralized social networking platform has since gained nearly 170,000 users. As per the host, bitcoinhackers.org, Mastodon will be a platform that houses “no scams, no shitcoin, no impersonation, no begging and no illegal content,” further advising its users to “keep it civil and we should all survive.”
At the time of writing, Mastodon has seen nearly 7,591 statuses being updated, with its top ten list of active instances constantly being refreshed.
