Prime Minister of Malta Joseph Muscat summoned his nerves of steel to say the biggest, boldest statement about blockchain to the world. Speaking at the UN General Assembly, Muscat hailed blockchain technology and said that it would eventually allow cryptocurrencies to become the future of money. He is now being glorified as an icon on Reddit forums, but there is a darker side of the argument that still latches on.
Muscat Speaks on Digital CurrenciesIn his speech, Muscat spoke about cryptocurrencies and talked about Malta’s vision of becoming the Blockchain Island. He said:
“I passionately believe technology revolutionizes and improves systems. This is why in Malta, we have launched ourselves as the Blockchain Island. By being the first jurisdiction worldwide to regulate this new technology that previously existed in a legal vacuum. Blockchain makes cryptocurrencies inevitable future of money. More transparent it helps filter good business from bad business.”
Malta, Muscat noted, recognizes the massive potential of blockchain and has opened its gates for the crypto community too. He also talked about favorable crypto regulation in the country, which helps businesses thrive.
The strategy has been successful in most part as the country’s extensive focus on blockchain ecosystem development has attracted Binance, the largest crypto exchange in the world with over 10 million users, to shift base. Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao said that his company is looking forward to investing in Malta and called it a “hotbed for innovative blockchain companies and a center of the blockchain ecosystem in Europe.”
Another billion-dollar project, Tron, is planning to establish a Malta office.
Concerns Raised on Malta’s IntentionsMuscat noted that the local government in Malta intends to use blockchain to eliminate third-party service providers from the system. The Prime Minister said:
“Blockchain can provide solutions to health care systems where patients have real ownership of their medical records. Emissions trading systems can be taken to the next level. We can help verify that humanitarian assistance is reaching its intent destination. We can make sure that nobody is deprived of their legitimate property because of compromised data.”
Several crypto community members hailed his intentions on Reddit, but some others have questioned them too. The speech focused heavily on promoting Malta as a pro-blockchain, pro-cryptocurrency nation. However, the EU may not be too happy with Malta’s strides as the EU is still not ready with blockchain and crypto regulations. Additionally, Muscat’s government has previously been accused of corruption charges after his name appeared in the Panama Papers for opening companies days after his election to office.
The Maltese economy is growing at a rapid pace and gaining global recognition, thanks to it embracing distributed ledger technology. However, the use of digital assets for money laundering, especially through state actors, is one of the concerns that remain unanswered. Till then, Malta is riding the crypto wave.
