With the increasing popularity of cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology, government enforcement agencies are now faced with a new breed of criminals who are not shy in using these new financial tools to run their illegal operations. Understandably, this new development might lead some police officers to feel that they are not adequately prepared to deal with these crypto-related crimes without additional training.
City of London Police’s New Cryptocurrency CourseIn response to these concerns, the City of London Police announced a new training program to help its officers better manage investigations involving cryptocurrencies, according to a report by the London-based news outlet City A.M.
The City of London Police described the new cryptocurrency course as the first of its kind. It will be offered by the Economic Crime Academy, where a pilot course was just successfully concluded in early July. Another run is scheduled this coming August 2018.
According to a spokesperson from the City of London Police:
“On successful completion of this course, participants will understand how to detect, seize and investigate the use of cryptocurrencies in an investigative context … It will be the first of its kind and has been developed in response to feedback from police officers nationally who felt there wasn’t enough training available in this area,”
Tracing and Recovering CryptosAccording to the City of London Police website, the course will include three areas that would be helpful in investigations involving cryptocurrencies. First, the course aims to explain the opportunities that may be available to investors to help them trace and recover cryptocurrencies.
Second, the Economic Crime Academy course will explore how cryptocurrencies might be used in crimes. Critics have always warned that cryptocurrencies, because of their anonymity, might be used in money laundering and even financing terrorism. And these areas will be discussed in detail in the program.
Last, the program aims to discuss “the legal framework relevant to cryptocurrency investigation.” Being a recently introduced financial tool, cryptos are a bit tricky as regulations might greatly vary depending on location. For investigating officers, it pays to be aware of the latest developments in this field.
