In an effort to become the first climate-positive city by 2020, the Liverpool City Council has decided to reduce its carbon emissions by up to 110 percent. They will achieve their goals with the help of a blockchain platform called Poseidon Foundation. Liverpool will also become the first climate positive authority in 2018.

Using Blockchain to Create a Better Environment for All

The city intends to fuel its ambitions by supporting global forest conservation projects. Liverpool mayor Joe Anderson said:

“I’m delighted we have signed this partnership agreement with Poseidon to connect Liverpool directly with climate positive projects across the globe.”

He talked about the reason why Poseidon was chosen as the city’s partner in the project. He said:

“Poseidon’s technology is the first of its kind to truly deliver a solution to governments, businesses, and individuals around the world to help reverse the causes of climate change and I am thrilled this agreement will bring this cutting-edge technology to our city.”

The city has been at the forefront of carbon emission reduction. Since 2012, the city has reduced its carbon emissions by 558,000 tons. They have also planned to reduce their overall carbon impact by 40 percent by 2030. The city is also installing LED streetlights (over 15,000) in 2,000 streets to help save energy consumption by 82 percent.

What Happens Next for Liverpool?

Poseidon Foundation will work with BAC Mono, based in Liverpool, to create the first climate positive car in the world. The Foundation will also work closely with schools and businesses in the city to help create awareness and reverse negative climate impact.

PwC considers blockchain as one of the “essential eight” technologies that will play a key role in tackling biodiversity and climate issues. The blockchain platform of Poseidon Foundation will act as an open-source digital ledger to make online dealings more secure for offset credits. Peru’s Amazon basin, the Cordillera Azul National Park and surrounding areas near the Andes mountain range will be benefitted through this project.

Laszlo Giricz from Poseidon said:

“This is a ground-breaking partnership not just for Poseidon and Liverpool, but globally. For the first time, a city will use blockchain technology to go beyond rebalancing its carbon footprint – leading the way in the fight against climate change.”

Giricz also noted that Liverpool is a “shining example” to other cities in the UK (and globally), which sets standards for technology adoption for meeting the greatest challenges of humanity.
