The Tron foundation announced on Nov. 1st that Justin Sun, the founder and chief executive of Tron, a foundation building a decentralized internet had donated $10,000 to Donatefornetneutrality.com.
The donation will provide funding to Donatefornetneutrality.com’s efforts to lobby for the reversal of the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) rule, which is accused of killing net neutrality and granting too much power in the hands of the few. Justin Sun and the Tron Foundation are increasingly dipping their hands in charitable work and have already pledged millions for other causes.
Tron’s Donation and the Quest for an Open InternetSun expressed his support for Donatefornetneutrality.com and urged the Tron and BitTorrent communities to donate in support of net neutrality. Sun remarked:
“Given my deep belief in an open and decentralized internet, I support Donatefornetneutrality.com and urge others to do the same in this critical moment where Congress can still act in favor of net neutrality.”
He further stated that free and open internet “fosters innovation that benefits not just a few, but all of us.” He believes that it is “everyone’s responsibility” to protect and push for net neutrality.
Evan Greer, the deputy director at Fight for the Future, said that Tron and BitTorrent have joined in the “fight for internet freedom and privacy.” He expressed his gratitude, saying:
“They’ve helped us sound the alarm and rally the internet at the most important moments. We’re so grateful for this support at a crucial moment in the battle for net neutrality.”
Sun also serves as the CEO after Tron acquired BitTorrent earlier this year. He wants to drum up support from BitTorrent’s community of more than 100 million users. BitTorrent has a good history of fighting for net neutrality alongside Donatefornetneutrality.com and Fightforthefuture.org.
This is Sun’s major donation in less than three weeks. The Tron founder recently pledged $3 million to Binance’s Blockchain Charity Fund (BCF). At the time, he quoted saying:
“I will dedicate the resources I have gained from co-governing the network to causes that will benefit and empower society. I hope my actions will inspire more people to tap into the great potential of blockchain technology to truly make a positive impact.”
Fight for Net NeutralityNet neutrality refers to “equal access to the internet.” In June, the Senate passed a resolution that deregulates the internet, allowing internet service providers to slow down websites or gain an unfair advantage over competitors.
The Donateforneutrality.com website is planning to raise $100,000. It has raised more than $37,000 so far.
The organization plans to use the donation to make calls and run billboards, newspaper & online ads to pressure lawmakers to reverse the deal. Donateforneutrality.com plans to organize meetings with candidates who are willing to support the fight for net neutrality and protest against those in favor of the rule.
The organization will mail postcards and put up lawn signs to inform voters on the candidates in favor or against net neutrality. The website also has a list of key people in favor of net neutrality.
