As some of our regular readers may remember, a few days back the BitTorrent token project was thrust into the spotlight when an article published by a respected media outlet questioned whether the TRON network possessed the “necessary processing capacity” to handle the thousands of transactions per second which were needed to make BitTorrent’s Token system work seamlessly.
Future of BitorrentThe aforementioned article was penned by a former BitTorrent employee ‘Simon Morris’, who parted ways with the firm after the company was acquired by TRON. Since, the takeover, the BitTorrent engineering team has been revamped and has been infused with other members from the TRON dev brass whose expertise lies in the field of peer-to-peer networking.
While, Morris was a bit skeptical about TRON’s native transaction throughput capacity, he did go on record to state the following:
“Automated auctions to prioritize download queues, Morris says, could make the entire BitTorrent network as much as 40 percent faster.”
Justin Sun Defends His New ProjectComing to the defence of his BitTorrent Token Project, Sun was quick to note that the project’s whitepaper was released around a fortnight back (on Jan. 3rd), which was a full one week before the slanderous article was posted online.
He then went on to say that the issues posed by Morris are quite clearly tackled in the whitepaper:
“BitTorrent Inc. will deploy an ‘on-chain/off-chain exchange,’ which exists to facilitate the transfer of tokens between a high-performance private ledger and the public TRON blockchain.”
In layman's terms, we can see that the new system will be making use of a hybrid protocol wherein the transferring of files will be done by splitting them into tiny pieces for exchange with many peers. However, what’s different is the fact that each individual exchange will require the customer to process a micropayment (which will be made off-chain). Finally, when the exchange is completed, all of the micro-payments will be anchored using an on-chain consensus protocol.
Final TakeSun has time and again said that he is looking forward to “a spring launch of the BitTorrent token” because it has the potential to completely change the way in which traditional P2P platforms work. If successful, the system will allow creators to not only gain more control over their files but also give them the ability to selectively share their data with other members of the network.
