In a recent blog post on IOTA’s official Medium page, Darcy Camargo discusses Tangle technology. Tangle and it’s associated cryptocurrency, IOTA, are a real threat to the dominance of blockchain and bitcoin. The post describes some ways in which different behaviors of the randomized Tangle architecture could be achieved via alpha, its randomized walk system.
What Can Tangle Achieve?Camargo suggests that studying Tangle is difficult because it is a “random structure defined by a separate random agent: the random walk,” known as alpha. He then goes on to describe the results of his study of the architecture.
He talks more specifically about recurrence and transience — two terms from the probability theory that would come in handy in this randomized system. He describes how tips or unapproved transactions in this system are never permanent. Using L(t) to denote the tip, Camargo describes the behavior of the tip using stimulations from Bartosz Kusmierz, showing that the number of tips growing over time is a problem.
He also suggests how Tangle solves this problem by keeping the alpha value of the tips very small, slowing their growth in the process. Note that in this architecture, every new transaction must approve two previous transactions.
Per Alon Gal, who excellently describes how random alpha walks are used in Tangle, any transaction that has a large number of approvers will likely not be abandoned in Tangle. Moreover, honest transactions will be approved more quickly. This means that transactions with the largest cumulative weight get an edge over others.
Camargo suggests that the transactions that get left behind in the process will simply need to reattach. However, because of the swiftness of the structure, tips will be approved quickly. The transience factor, leading to a small number of transactions getting left behind, could be managed automatically as the “random walk decreases the probability of approving these transactions over time, so the majority of probability is concentrated within the most recent tips. This keeps recent transactions from approving old ones and contributes to the good behavior we aim for.”
Creating Sustainable Blockchain InfrastructureTangle intends to create a more sustainable blockchain that can adjust itself even if there is some transience in the transactions. Occasional reattachments of some tips may become necessary over time as the number of transactions increases in the network. However, users can get a chance to decide if such a reattachment is necessary.
The blog suggests that the ultimate goal of this research would be to make the alpha value as small as possible without compromising the security attributes of the blockchain.
