Interchain Jam Highlights: OmniFlix - The Interchain Media Hub

2024-7-19 16:07

This edition of Interchain Jam Highlights recaps the live X session hosted by the ICF’s Robb Stack. As one of the earliest projects to develop in our ecosystem, OmniFlix has helped push the Interchain Stack to its limits with a variety of products for media stakeholders and a myriad of ecosystem contributions “building through the entire stack.” Let’s hear about OmniFlix’s journey, why the interchain is its “perfect match,” and what’s coming up in the year ahead.

Getting to Know the Interchain

OmniFlix Network is a peer-to-peer (p2p) network that empowers creators and communities to thrive in the decentralized media landscape by digitizing intellectual property (IP) rights and enabling their management, distribution, and assurance. Through a suite of decentralized applications (dApps), OmniFlix enables a wide range of activities, including publishing video NFTs, trading NFTs, running on-chain engagement campaigns, and streaming tokens between accounts in over 10 different denominations.

OmniFlix tooling includes OmniFlix Studio for managing and distributing content without writing a single line of code, OmniFlix Marketplace for publishing and monetizing NFT collections, OmniFlix TV, a web3 native media platform for running campaigns with networks and creators, and the upcoming OmniFlix Nucleus that enables users to publish and distribute their content to multiple platforms while maintaining full control over their assets.

As a pioneer of the interchain, OmniFlix was building with Cosmos SDK and Tendermint Core (now CometBFT) in early 2018, long before IBC was a reality, pushing the boundaries of the stack with its cutting-edge implementations. Its first testnet FlixNet 1 launched with over 900 nodes and a 20–25-second block duration. “It was a wild ride,” says Daya Reddy, co-founder of OmniFlix.

The OmniFlix Insync application uniting validators, delegators, and governance participants has also received high traction, implemented by Keplr upon launch to bootstrap $2.4 billion in value and integrated into many more projects, including Celestia, Stargaze, and Fetch.ai. Beyond growing its own network, OmniFlix has contributed to multiple Cosmos SDK-based projects, as co-founder Sistla Abhishek calls it, “building through the entire stack.” He explains, “We modified the Consensus itself, the SDK itself, native SDK modules, Rust contracts, you name it.”

Why OmniFlix Chose the Interchain Stack

OmniFlix began building in 2017 and working with different projects primarily focused on smart contracts on Ethereum, which needed to be pinged for transactions. This created problems for the developers when separating payments and contracts and managing OS-level data key points on media nodes. It was also challenging to integrate different components of OmniFlix with Ethereum’s architecture.

Daya says that coming across Cosmos SDK “felt like a match made in heaven.” The team was impressed by the vision for the interchain, by IBC, ABCI++, and type system, which allowed for easy interaction with the end user without the need to write contracts. Building as a sovereign chain suited OmniFlix’s decentralized media platform better.

“We also explored 17 other frameworks,” Sistla recalls. “You know, NEM, EOS, NEO, Waves, TRON, you name it, this was the scenario back in 2017.” He explains that the interchain, “suited the ethos of how we wanted to build out this infrastructure, being sovereign and connecting with every other ecosystem via IBC…This is the premise, and Omni, as the name suggests, with multiple ecosystems, is what we had in mind right from the start.”

Broader Adoption of OmniFlix Tech

With the DePIN market set to explode, OmniFlix is riding the wave by providing a service-based platform that enables creators to choose from different service provider offerings. This allows for a decentralized and sovereign content distribution network, giving creators full control over their content and enabling them to monetize their assets without relying on centralized platforms. Users can also run their own full nodes and lease them out, or configure their Media nodes to offer various services, such as running Studio, publishing to different platforms, or live streaming to multiple platforms simultaneously.

With more than a decade of experience in traditional media, Sistla and Daya have also worked with many mainstream companies, movie distribution houses, and record labels. Sistla explains, “These independent agencies, independent creators, and traditional media organizations have a catalog of content they need to manage. We implemented enterprise systems for them to manage their own media assets, their own agreements, the rights within those agreements, the partners within those agreements, and of course, the platforms onto which content is distributed. They now have a single source of truth to do whatever they want to.”

OmniFlix infrastructure manages over 9,000 movies, 2,000 albums, and around 25,000 tracks. Akash Network is currently using a version of OmniFlix Nucleus, and traditional media companies including Disney India, are integrating OmniFlix technology into their platforms. The interchain’s most important annual event Cosmoverse is also powered by OmniFlix technology, highlighting important cases of real-world adoption. “Of course, we have a long way to go, but we’re just getting started,” Sistla says.

With the interchain expanding beyond Cosmos SDK chains to external ecosystems such as Polkadot, Solana, Polygon, and Cardano, how does OmniFlix feel about its growth? Sistla enthuses, “We always believed in this future where multiple ecosystems would utilize IBC, and we’re very glad that it is happening right now… All of these non-Cosmos SDK-based chains can now leverage IBC and we’re happy that we’ve prepared for this future where this would happen.”

Catching Up with OmniFlix

If you want to find out more about OmniFlix and the exciting products it’s developing, be sure to follow them on X. The team also hosts a weekly X Space session, FlixTalk, every Wednesday at 2 p.m. UTC and is planning its annual FlixFest during Cosmoverse Dubai, so watch out for further details. Also, tune into the next Interchain Jam session on Thursday, July 25 at 2 p.m. UTC with Akash Network, the decentralized cloud computing marketplace.
