With the rising popularity of cryptocurrency and the blockchain technology behind it, manufacturers are now tapping into the new niche by churning out new gadgets showcasing these new technologies. One of the latest blockchain and crypto-focused devices about to hit the market is the HTC Exodus 1, dubbed as the company’s first blockchain phone, a smartphone that promises greater security for decentralized applications such as crypto wallets.
Exodus 1 Pre-orders Are Now AcceptedTaiwanese consumer electronics manufacturing firm HTC finally unveiled its first blockchain focused phone on October 23, 2018, according to CNBC. Called the Exodus 1, the smartphone will be released by December this year, but the company is already accepting preorders for the phone. HTC says the upcoming phone will cost 0.15 bitcoins or 4.78 ether tokens which means buyers who wish to preorder will need to shell out some cryptos for the transaction.
HTC says that the Exodus 1 is a blockchain phone because the phone is blockchain encrypted, according to CNET. The phone features what HTC calls a secure enclave, which is an area on the phone’s chip that is kept separate from its Android operating system.
Why the Secure Enclave Is ImportantStoring cryptocurrencies using the Android system makes it more vulnerable to hacking. Exodus 1’s secure enclave offers better security since it is separate from the Android system running the phone. This makes it ideal for storing crypto-related data such as private keys.
HTC’s decentralized chief officer Phil Chen told CNBC that:
“Think of it as a micro OS that runs in parallel with Android. It basically is a wallet, but the wallet, what it does is hold your private keys.”
As a blockchain phone, the Exodus 1 will run decentralized apps, also known as DApps, which are programs run on blockchain. It also has the “Social Key Recovery” feature, where users may still be able to access their cryptocurrencies even if they lose their phones or forgot their private keys.
Exodus 1 SpecsThe blockchain phone features a 6-inch QHD+ display with a resolution of 1440 x 3120 pixels. It comes with a 6GB RAM, 126GB storage, Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, and runs on Android Oreo.
The phone features an 8-megapixel dual front camera and a 16-megapixel dual rear camera. It is both dustproof and waterproof with a rating of IP68.
