The NFT industry is huge, and now we can literally say it’s gone viral. Data project Viromusic used Covid-19’s genetic sequence to launch an NFT collection of songs. The first song has been sold and the buyer is asking for 100 Ether (ETH/USD), currently equivalent to $380,000, on the resale market.
The process of DNA sonificationThe tune is quite lovely, to be honest. You can hear it on Rarible here. The collection was made through a process called DNA sonification, where the genetic code letters inside the coronavirus are transformed into a melody. When we listen to the song, we are hearing the virus’ self-replicating instructions.
Every NFT in the collection is unique because it’s based on different note mappings or parts of the viral code. The viral code is the basis for the melody. Other instruments accompany it.
The first NFT in the collection was made using RNA position 28866 to 29459 (in the nucleocapsid gene). The mapping of musical notes to amino acids is as follows: alanine = Eb5, arginine = Ab6 and so on.
10K corona songs were minted as NFTsA total of 10,000 coronavirus songs were minted as NFTs since the start of the pandemic. Most of them are new age, featuring combinations of piano, drums, strings, guitar and ambient synthetic sounds. You can made bids on the music on Rarible. Most NFTs cost around $265.
NFTs are available in every formIt seems there are NFTs in every possible form today. However, digital art is still where most of the money is. People who buy the NFTs in the collection will not only get a high-resolution audio file of the song, but also learn which genes correspond to the code and what the virus uses them for.
Organizers of the NFT auction told Fortune:
The idea for this collection was born from an awe of the beauty in the code of life. We hope this project helps to raise awareness that even a virus capable of inflicting such misery is fundamentally based on the same code as every living thing on earth.
Content is unlocked after purchase and contains a full-resolution WAV file of the NFT. The contract is based on ERC-721 (OpenZeppelin).
Nucleocapsid, a gene that helps the virus pack together its RNA tightly in the middle, was used to make the song. It also helps create the outer shell together with the membrane gene.
