Google Takes Action As Fake Crypto Apps Caught On Play Store By Stefanko
In a previous Bitcoin Exchange Guide post, news surrounding four fake crypto related apps on Google’s Play Store was reported, in which Lukas Stefanko was given complete credit for having caught the suspicious apps. In particular, there were four apps involved, in which three were categorized as “fake wallets” with the remainder falling under what Stefanko called “phishing”.
The former involves generating a public address that belongs to the attacker with the user having the slightest clue. So, when he or she send funds, the attacker receives them. The latter was reported as a “malware disguised as a MetaMask app,” which requested users for their key and passwords.
Interestingly, a CCN post (https://www.ccn.com/google-boots-four-malicious-crypto-apps-from-play-store/) , which covers this exact story, also shared Google’s point of view. In particular, it seems like the Google Play Store has been consistently taking down new apps that come their way.
When it comes to the developers of the said apps, Google revealed that nearly 90% of them failed to comply by their set rules, which require developers to notify users of the nature of the app and to include that “it was a crypto mining script” if it is one.
At the time of the four removals, Google has credited machine learning for their ability to “detect and block malicious extensions.”
