Google Shopping product exec Surojit Chatterjee is no longer working at Alphabet Inc., as he has decided to be a product officer for the San Francisco-based crypto exchange Coinbase.
The announcement was made in a Coinbase blog post from Wednesday. Chatterjee was a Google vice president, who last year was in charge of redesigning Google Shopping, the service that’s struggling to compete with Amazon when it comes to dominating the e-commerce market. Google Shopping has an online storefront that sells items from many retailers and brands.
Chatterjee’s Flipkart Experience More Relevant to CoinbaseIn the blog post, Coinbase’s chief exec Brian Armstrong says that even if Chatterjee spent 11 years working for Google, the two years he worked as a product leader for the Indian online shop Flipkart are more important for Coinbase:
“Surojit’s 11 years at Google will be valuable as we continue to scale Coinbase into a company with a lasting and meaningful impact on the world’s financial system. But his experience leading Flipkart — an exciting startup in one of the world’s fastest-growing markets — arguably provided him an even closer look at the complexity and inefficiency of global commerce.”
Chatterjee’s New Role Will be to Make Cryptocurrencies MainstreamArmstrong also mentioned that Chatterjee’s new role at Coinbase will be to make cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) mainstream as far as paying for services and goods goes, especially in international transactions. He’s expected to bring the Coinbase products to another billion people from all the world, as the blog post reads:
“[But] it’s clear that Surojit’s insights and experiences on the front lines of global commerce make him the perfect person to lead our product organization, help us continue our pace of repeatable innovation, and bring Coinbase products to the next billion crypto users around the world.”
Chatterjee will start work on Monday. In a 2018 financing round, Coinbase was valued at over $8 billion. Besides, it has investors like Intercontinental Exchange Inc., the owner if the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Tiger Global Management.
